An Analysis of Translation Methods on narrative Text from Indonesian into English Done by Sixth Semester Students at Artha Wacana Christian University

Translation is changing an activity of changing a language into another language spoken or written. It has become something which affects the development of world literature. This research was conducted to identify the translation methods applied by the students in translating narrative text. The objective of this research were to describe 1. the types of translation methods, and 2. the dominant types of translation methods used by the sixth semester students. This research was classified as descriptive qualitative method. The researcher carried out this study on May 2022. The researcher obtained the data from the 33 students. Based on the analysis, it was found out that there were eight types of translation methods used in translating the story from Indonesian into English. They were 1.word-for-word translation example : SL : pada suatu hari Sangkuriang minta pamit untuk berburu.TL : ‘to a certain day Sangkuriang request leave for hunt’. (2) literal translation example SL : Dayang Sumbi tidak akan menikah dengan Sangkuriang.TL : ‘Dayang Sumbi would never marry with her son’.(3) faithful translation example SL : Ibu pergi ke pasar TL : ‘Mother goes to the market’. (4) semantic translation example SL : air sungai mengalir TL : ‘the river run’. (5) adaptation translation example SL : Rambut nenek itu putih seperti salju TL : ‘Grandma’s hair was white like cotton’. (6) free translation example SL : suatu hari sangkuriang minta pamit untuk berburu.TL : ‘one day sangkuriang want to hunting. (7) idiomatic translation example SL : menendang ember TL : ‘kick the bucket’. (8) communicative translation example SL : Pada suatu hari Sangkuriang minta pamit untuk berburu. TL : ‘One day, Sangkuriang asked a permission to Dayang Sumbi to go to hunting’.Relating to the dominant types of translation methods, it was found out communicative translation type was the dominant 33 times used and it was followed by word for word translation that consist of 26 times used, faithful translation was 6 times, semantic translation was 3 times, literal translation was used 12 times, adaptation translation was used 0 times, free translation was used 0 times and idiomatic translation was 5 times used.

ABSTRACT
The aims of this research is (1) to find out translation procedures applied by translator in translating the book Active English Conversation 1st edition from English to Indonesia, (2).To find out the dominant type of translation procedures from English to Indonesia applied in active English conversation textbook. In this research the writer used qualitative method to find out the translation procedures and quantitative method to find out the percentages of translation procedures. The result of this research is (1) the writer find out that there are 156 data of translation procedures applied on Active English Conversation Textbookconsist of (a) Borrowing is 16 data (10,25%), (b) Calque is 18 data (11,53%), (c) literal translation is 113 data (71, 51%) and (d) Transposition is 8 data (5, 12%) , equivalence 1 data (0, 64%) . (2) The dominant type of translation procedure from English to Indonesia applied inactive English conversation textbook is literal translation has 113 data (71, 51%).

ABSTRACT
The title of this writing is ‘‘ A Study On Translation From Bahasa Indonesia Into English of Second year students of SMA Kristen 2 Kalabahi In School Year 2021/2022. The research problem of this study are (1). What are types of translation used to translate the text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of second year students of SMA Kristen 2 Kalabahi. (2). What are the processes used to translate text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of second years students of SMA Kristen 2 Kalabahi. The aims of this study are (1). To describe the type of translation used to translate the text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of second years students of SMA Kristen 2 Kalabahi. (2). To identify the process of translate used to the text from Bahasa Indonesia into English of second year students of SMA Kristen 2 Kalabahi. In this research the writer used qualitative method. The place of this research were 15 sample of SMA Kristen 2 Kalabahi. Data collection technique in this research used descriptive qualitative method was procedure which analysed translation from Bahasa Indonesia into English. The instruments used in this research the writer used observation . After analyzing the data, the writer found that there are two type of translation, namely: First, Literal translation. Second, Idiomatic translation. furthermore there are three processes of translation, namely : First. Analysis of source language text. Second. transference of Message. Third. Restructurisation. writer hopes this research will add more knowledge about translation of Bahasa Indonesia into English and its processes.

AN ANALYSIS TRANSLATIONS ERRORS OF INDONESIAN INTO ENGLISH MADE BY THE FIFTH-SEMESTER STUDENTS OF ENGLISH EDUCATION AT ARTHA WACANA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY ABSTRACT Student, Name1 Supervisor1, Name.2 Supervisor2, Name.3 (MeheLay Yani K) (Tamelan Thersia M ) (Tlonaen Zuvyati A) This research is entitled ”An Analysis Translation Errors Of Indonesian Into English Made By The Fifth-Semester Students Of English Education At Artha Wacana Christian Univesity”. The problem of this study is what are the types of errors made by the students in translating text Indonesian into English? This study aims to find out and classify the types of errors made by the students in their translation text of Indonesian into English. The research applied a descriptive qualitative method. The data is taken from the Students’ of one translation task. In analyzing the data, the researcher uses the theory of the types of translation errors by Sager (1983). The research shows that there are four types of translation errors, namely inversion of meaning, addition of meaning, omission of meaning, and deviation of meaning. As the result of this research, the errors used in the translation errors of Indonesian into English made by the fifth-semester students is the deviation of meaning with 14 times occurrences, followed by the omission of meaning with 11 times occurrences, the addition of meaning with 8 times occurrences, and inversion of meaning with 3 times occurrences. Therefore, the researcher hopes that teachers and students should pay more attention to it and learn more about how to translate from source language to target language. This study aims to determine the types of errors in translating narrative texts from Indonesian to English and the most dominant types of errors in translating narrative texts from Indonesian to English by students of class X IPA 1 SMA Negeri 4 Kota Kupang. This research uses descriptive qualitative research. The subjects of this study were 15 students of class X IPA 1. The data source was taken from translating students' narrative texts from Indonesian into English. The research instrument is a translation task. The translation task was used to obtain data about student errors in Indonesian to English translation texts. The findings of this study indicate that there are four types of translation errors, namely: Omission, ex: SL: Then the dog arrived, SL: The dog arrived, Correct: Then the dog arrived. In addition, ex : SL: Cat and fox, TL: Cat and fox, Correct: Cat and fox. Misformation, ex: SL: A moment later, TL: Just then, Correct: A moment later. Misordering, ex: SL: At least I know, TL: At least I know, Correct: At least I know. Moreover, the most dominant types of translation errors, the researcher concluded that the students' problems in translating narrative texts from Indonesian to English were mostly formation errors of 120 errors. Misformation is the most dominant type carried out by students of class X IPA 1 SMA Negeri 4 Kota Kupang. Suggestions for improving the teaching and learning process, especially in the teaching and learning process of translation as one of the subjects in class X IPA 1 SMA Negeri 4 Kota Kupang, students must practice translating Indonesian texts into English or vice versa in class or outside of class to improve their translation skills.

Translation methods are used to translate a text from various sources such as song lyric, newspaper, novels, even translated texts in popular movies so that the translation results are directed and easy to understand. The writer investigates translation methods used in Wednesday movie with the research problem: what are the types of translation methods that found in English-Indonesia subtitle of Wednesday movie? This study aims to find out and describe the types of translation methods according to Newmark (1988) found in English-Indonesia subtitles of Wednesday movie. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from the first episode of Wednesday's movie. The writer classified the data in the form of sentences and phrases which are divided based on each translation method. The results show that there are eight types of translation methods used, namely word-for-word translation, literal translation, faithful translation, semantic translation, adaptation translation, free translation, idiomatic translation, and communicative translation. Subtitle of Wednesday movie can be understood because the translation results show that the translator translated based on the content and adapts it to the understanding of the target language through sentences or words that are often used by the target language.

AN ANALYSIS OF TRANSLATION PROCEDURES ON THE BOOK OF MARK NEW TESTAMENT IN KUPANG MALAY ABSTRACT This thesis entitled “an analysis of translation procedures on the book of mark new testament in kupang malay‟‟. The translation is extremely beneficial, especially for those who are unable to speak or understand a foreign language. Translation procedures were the tools for transferring meaning from one language to another language. The writer created the research problems as follows: (1) what were the types of translation procedures found in the book of Marks in Kupang Malay? (2) What were the meanings of sentences based on translation procedure found in the book of Marks in Kupang Malay? Aims of the study namely:To find out the types procedures of translation on the bookmark in Kupang Malay, to find out the meanings of sentences based on translation procedures on the book of Marks in the Kupang Malay. In this study the writer use descriptive qualitative analyse, this study the writer found 7 types of procedures translation namely: borrowing, calque, literal or word for word, transposition, modulation, equivalence, adaptation. The procedure for translation on the Book of Mark New Testament The most widely used is modulations, adaptations and literal or word for word and types of meaning in translation namely: grammatical meaning, referential meaning, connotative meaning. The aims of this study are to find out the translation procedures found to translate the abstracts of Students’ Thesis and to find out the dominant translation procedures in the translation of the abstracts. The research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data was taken from the Students Thesis Abstract. Thesis abstracts is selected because abstracts as a brief summary of the most important points in a scientific paper. In order to identified and classify the translation procedures applied in thesis abstracts, Vinay and Darbelnet’s theory (in Venuti, 2000:84). about translation procedures is used. As the result of this research, the most dominant procedure used in translated thesis abstracts of Students Thesis Abstract Of English Education Study Program is borrowing with 27 occurrences (36 %), followed by literal Translation with 23 occurrences (30,67%),calque with 8 occurrences (10,67%),Equivalence with 6 occurrences (8%), Transposition with 6 occurrences(8%) and Modulation with 5 occurrences(6,67%) Keywords: Thesis abstracts, found, translation procedures

The title of this writing is “An Analysis of Category Shifts in Paulo Coelho’s The Winner Stands Alone into Indonesian Translation”. There are two research problems used in this writing, 1). What are the types of category shifts used in The Winner Stands Alone’s Indonesian translation? 2. What is the dominant type of category shifts used in The Winner Stands Alone’s Indonesian translation? In order to get the data, the data taken from Paulo Coelho’s English novel The Winner Stands Alone novel and its Indonesian translation Sang Pemenang Berdiri Sendirian. This writing belongs to Qualitative research. The type of data used in this research is documentary. The instruments used in this writing were the writer herself, data sheets, and related references. The writer hopes this writing could give many valuable contributions to build up the understanding in learning English as second language especially in the learning process of Translation subjects. The result of the data analysis shows that all types of category shifts, namely structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift occurred in The Winner Stands Alone novel’s Indonesian translation. From the data, the writer found there were 293 cases of category shifts occurred. Structure shift with 135 data or 46,07% out of 293 total data, followed by unit shift with 96 data or 32,77% out of 293 total data, the third place was intra-system shift with 37 data or 12,63% out of 293 total data, and the fourth one was class shift with 25 data or 8,53% out of 293 total data. Therefore, the dominant type of category shifts occurred in the Indonesian transalation of The Winner Stands Alone novel is structure shift. Skripsi ini berjudul “Sebuah Analisis Pergeseran Kategori pada The Winner Stands Alone milik Paulo Coelho ke Dalam Terjemahan Bahasa Indonesianya”. Ada dua masalah penelitian yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini yaitu 1.) Apa jenis pergeseran kategori yang digunakan dalam terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia The Winner Stands Alone? 2.) Apa jenis pergeseran kategori yang dominan digunakan dalam terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia The Winner Stands Alone? Dalam mengambil data, data diambil dari novel Bahasa Inggris Paulo Coelho The Winner Stands Alone dan terjemahan Bahasa Indonesianya Sang Pemenang Berdiri Sendirian. Skripsi ini adalah skripsi Kualitatif. Tipe data yang digunakan adalah dokumentasi. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam skripsi ini adalah penulis sendiri, lembaran data, dan referensi-referensi terkait. Penulis berharap skripsi ini dapat memberikan banyak kontribusi berharga yang membangun pemahaman dalam mempelajari Bahasa Inggris sebagai bahasa kedua terutama dalam proses pembelajaran mata kuliah Terjemahan. Hasil dari analisis data menunjukkan bahwa semua jenis pergeseran kategori yakni pergeseran struktur, pergeseran kelas, pergeseran unit, dan pergeseran intra-sistem terjadi dalam terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia novel The Winner Stands Alone. Dari data tersebut, penulis menemukan ada 293 kasus pergeseran kategori yang terjadi. Pergeseran struktur dengan 135 data atau 46,07% dari 293 total data, diikuti oleh pergeseran unit dengan 96 data atau 32,77% dari 293 total data, di tempat ketiga adalah pergeseran intra-sistem dengan 37 data atau 12,63% dari 293 total data, dan yang keempat adalah pergeseran kelas dengan 25 data atau 8,53% dari 293 total data. Oleh karena itu, tipe pergeseran kategori yang dominan terjadi dalam novel terjemahan Bahasa Indonesia The Winner Stands Alone adalah pergeseran struktur.

This research was conducted under the title “AN ANALYSIS OF LOSS AND GAIN IN THE TRANSLATION OF INDONESIAN SUBTITLE OF NOAH MOVIE (2014) BY DARREN ARONOFSKY”. The aims of this study are to find out the loss and gain found in the Indonesian Subtitle of Noah Movie by Darren Aronofsky. Qualitative research was used as the method of this research and the documentation technique was used to collect the data to complete this study. Bassnett’s theory of loss and gain was used as the main theory to analyze the data. Based on the analysis of the loss and gain from the movie, the writer found 113 patterns of loss and gain of the Indonesian subtitle of the movie. The number of loss is 93 forms, for example: SL: You see those others flowers? TL: Lihat bunga-bunga yang lain? The process of translation that is in the data above is in form of question. We can see the translation from source language You see those others flowers? Into target language Lihat bunga-bunga yang lain? In the data, it shows Noah asks to the Ham to see the flowers. The word you as a pronoun that refers to Ham who the person being asked. That’s why the underlined word does not translate, it is to make the translation can be simple and does not repeat the word’s meaning in the target language. Besides it, by lost that word, there is no reduction in meaning in the target language. While, the number of gain is 20 forms, for example: SL: I don’t. I saw his mountain. TL: Aku tak tahu. Aku melihat gunungnya. In the data, Naemah, Noah’s wife asks him about his grandfather condition, then Noah says to her, I don’t. I saw his mountain, it is written in the source language text. Meanwhile it can be read Aku tak tahu. Aku melihat gunungnya in the target language. The word tahu is gained in the target language to emphasize the meaning of the text. Moreover, the adding word makes the target language sounds more natural, so it is more acceptable to be read by the watchers. The other reason is to addition the meaning in the target language. As the result of the study, the writer concluded that the loss and gain occurred in the movie subtitle because the result of the translation sounds more natural, acceptable and understandable by the target watchers in the target language.
