Abstrak
The writer conducted the research entitled “An Analysis on Slang Words Used in Whatsapp by the Group Members of the Ten Semester Students of Artha Wacana Christian University”.The research problems of this study were what are the types of slang words found in whatsapp by the group members of the ten semester students and what are the reasons of group members whatsapp chat using slang words?. The aims of this study were to categorize the types of slang found in whatsApp and to explain the reason of slang in WhatsApp. The method of this research was a descriptive qualitative method.The subjects of this research were the English students of Class F in academic year 2015. The instrument of this research were questionnaire and documentation.The result of this research found that there are two types of slang words, in-group slang and common slang. There are 17 slang words of in-group slang, they are Dun, G’monin, Abt, Idk, R u, Dunno, IC, Ofc, Ma, Bombed, Freaking funny, Crash it away, Freak out, Cz, Ya, Temme, Gotcha, Yup, Lmao, Gee. And there are 41 slang words of common slang, they are Guys, Gws, Kay, Wht, Otw, pissed, Hoax, Kinda, Wanna, Imma, Lol, Nope, Buddy, Hbd, Bro, Wth, Prank, Btw, Hip, Fatty, Whaddya, Yikes, X-mass, Omg, Sis, Lemme, Shit, Whacha, Hang around, Kitsch, Mom, Fav, Babe, Wtf, Thx, Nite, Congrat, Datz. The most dominant reason of using slang was 1) Just for fun; 2) To be different; 3) to enrich the language; 4) to reduce the excessive seriousness of a conversation
