Abstrak
This study aimed to analyze students’ interpretation on symbols and icons used in Adobe Reader application: Semiotic analysis. Total of data taken from toolbar menu of Adobe Reader application are 36 icons and symbols. The writer use test of multiple choice as the instrument in this study. The test given to the ten students of UKAW as the purposive sample in this research. The result is there are 13 data due to the icon type with basic image feature, 11 data refer to the abstract signifying icon type, 10 data refer to the text icon type, and 2 data due to the number icon type. Another, the researcher finds that the students’ understanding about icons and symbols used on PDF is at good category. This assumption is supported by following evidence: The achievement category of excellent with score at 9,6 – 10 achieved by 1 student (10%); 2 students (20%) were in very good classification with score at 8,6 – 9,5; 3 students (30%) were in good classification with score at 7,6 – 8,5; 2 students (20%) were in fairly good with score at 6,6 – 7,5; and 2 students (20%) were in fair classification with score at 5,6 – 6,5. None of student were in poor with score at 3,6 – 5,5 and very poor classification with score at 0 – 3,5. Based on the data above, it shows that most of students (80%) were in fair till excellent classification. Afterwards, the researcher concluded that student of UKAW Kupang have a good knowledge in understanding icons and symbols used on PDF.
