ABSTRACT A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON TEACHERS’ STRATEGIES TO OVERCOME STUDENTS’ SPEAKING DIFFICULTIES AT ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM OF ARTHA WACANA CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITY The problem of this research is "What are the difficulties experienced by second-semester English student in the English language study program at Artha Christian University in Kupang and what are the strategies used by English lecturers in teaching to solve the difficulties of English students especially second semester especially at Artha Wacana Kupang Christian University?" This study used a descriptive qualitative method. The subjects of this study were two English teaching lecturers who taught the speaking subject in the second semester, the English language study program at Artha Wacana Kupang University. The data collection instruments were questionnaires and interviews. After obtaining the data, the authors analyzed the difficulties experienced by second-semester students in speaking English in the English study program and analyzed the strategies used by English lecturers in teaching in solving the difficulties of second-semester students in speaking English.The results showed that most of the students were less motivated to learn to speak in English, some students lacked vocabulary in arranging words to speak in English, some students were afraid to speak in English, and some students lacked confidence in speaking in English. And some students have difficulty pronouncing certain words in English. Therefore, the strategies applied to solve the problem of students' difficulties in speaking English in the author's analysis are: Repetition and imitating, makes the script of conversation, grammar checker, makes the student perform in groups, sense of controls, motivation the students, inquiry strategy, the role-play, the brain-storming, the drilling strategy, and the game's strategy.
