Abstrak

ABSTRACT A DESCRIPTIVE STUDY ON COMPOUND WORDS IN THE MATTHEW GOSPEL OF PA LI HAWU This thesis entitled ‘’ A descriptive study on compound words in the Matthew Gospel of pa li Hawu’’. It aims to find out the types and meaning of compound words that found in the Matthew Gospel of pa li Hawu. The data collected from 28 chapters of Matthew Gospel. The method used is descriptive qualitative. The result shows that types of compound word is divide into three, they are compound noun or commonly said as noun head word, compound verb or commonly said as verb head word, and compound adjective or commonly said as adjective head word. From the three types of compound words, they are has sub-types as follow: Noun plus noun compound for example Ama ‘father’+ appu ‘Grandfather’= Ancestor, Adjective plus Noun for example Dhara ‘deep’ + lua ‘edge’ = condition, Verb plus Noun for example wie ‘give’ + hu ‘point’ = spoilt, Noun plus Verb for example kolo ‘crown’ + loro ‘carry’ = descendent, Adjective plus Verb for example Potte ‘turning’ + appi ‘weave’ = Impostor, Verb plus Verb for example peloko ‘prepare’ + Nga’a ‘eat’ = marriage, Noun plus Adjective for example koro ‘pock’ + djawa ‘foreign’ = pigeon, Adjective plus Adjective for example Mekae ‘shy’ + Dhara ‘deep’ = shy, and last is Verb plus Adjective for example kebbhala ‘fall’ + ae ‘much’ = moorland. Each of the word in Sabu language above carry its own meaning. But when they are combined together, they formed a new one nominal category of word and new meaning.
