Considering Pragma-Dialectics honors the monumental contributions of one of the foremost international figures in current argumentation scholarship: Frans van Eemeren. The volume presents the research efforts of his colleagues and addresses how their work relates to the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation with which van Eemeren’s name is so intimately connected. This tribute serves to highlight the varied approaches to the study of argumentation and is destined to inspire researchers to advance scholarship in the field far into the future. Keeping in Touch With Pragma-Dialectics

"Keeping in touch with Pragma-Dialectics" is written to honor Frans van Eemeren and his work in the field of argumentation theory on the occasion of his retirement. The volume contains 17 contributions from teams of authors consisting of a combination of a pragma-dialectician and one or two researchers with a different background in the field of argumentation. In this volume, comparisons between the pragma-dialectical approach and other approaches are made, aspects of strategic maneuvering such as the use of presentational techniques, adaptation to the audience and the selection of topics are dealt with and the influence of specific institutional contexts such as politics, medicine and internet forums on strategic maneuvering are discussed.

Contextualizing Pragma-Dialectics

Contextualizing Pragma-Dialectics contains a selection of 18 article reporting on research conducted in the past decade in which the institutional context in which argumentative discourse takes place is systematically taken into account. Some articles provide relevant theoretical backgrounds, other articles make clear how the extended pragma-dialectical theory can be used to analyse and evaluate argumentative discourse in specific institutional contexts. Next to argumentative discourse in the legal domain and the medical context of health communication, a great deal of attention is paid to various argumentative practices in the political domain or dealing with specific social issues. A contribution on multimodal argumentation is also included. All contributing authors are actively engaged in the International Learned Institute for Argumentation Studies (ILIAS).

Argumentation Theory: A Pragma-Dialectical Perspective

The book offers a compact but comprehensive introductory overview of the crucial components of argumentation theory. In presenting this overview, argumentation is consistently approached from a pragma-dialectical perspective by viewing it pragmatically as a goal-directed communicative activity and dialectically as part of a regulated critical exchange aimed at resolving a difference of opinion. As a result, the book also systematically explains how the constitutive parts of the pragma-dialectical theory of argumentation, which are discussed in a number of separate publications, hang together. A Pragma-stylistic Study of Trump's Tweets in 2018

Academic Paper from the year 2021 in the subject German Studies - Semiotics, Pragmatics, Semantics, University of Babylon, language: English, abstract: The present study is concerned with pragma-stylistically analyzing Trump's tweets. It aims at investigating the use and frequencies of the pragmatic components, namely, speech acts, politeness and impoliteness strategies, Grice's maxims and referring expressions, which are utilized by Trump in his tweets in 2018. Both linguistic and nonlinguistic factors are taken into consideration when approaching the tweets under scrutinizing. An eclectic model is proposed by the study to conduct a qualitative pragma-stylistic analysis. Frequencies and percentages are also utilized to describe the results quantitatively. The findings of the analysis indicate that the pragmatic components which are frequently employed by Trump are representative speech acts, positive politeness strategies, positive impoliteness strategies, flouting the maxim of quality and definite expressions.

Algorithmic Differentiation of Pragma-Defined Parallel Regions

Numerical programs often use parallel programming techniques such as OpenMP to compute the program's output values as efficient as possible. In addition, derivative values of these output values with respect to certain input values play a crucial role. To achieve code that computes not only the output values simultaneously but also the derivative values, this work introduces several source-to-source transformation rules. These rules are based on a technique called algorithmic differentiation. The main focus of this work lies on the important reverse mode of algorithmic differentiation. The inherent data-flow reversal of the reverse mode must be handled properly during the transformation. The first part of the work examines the transformations in a very general way since pragma-based parallel regions occur in many different kinds such as OpenMP, OpenACC, and Intel Phi. The second part describes the transformation rules of the most important OpenMP constructs.

El florecimiento del campo de los estudios sobre argumentación en lasúltimas cinco décadas es sin duda uno de los fenómenos intelectualesde mayor interés. Al igual que cualquier otro campo de estudios, elprogreso depende del desarrollo de la teoría. En el caso de laargumentación, existe un consenso general de que la teoría másavanzada, por no decir la única propiamente dicha, es lapragma-dialéctica. Esta teoría fue formulada inicialmente a principios delos años 80 en la Universidad de Amsterdam, y desde entonces hacontinuado desarrollándose en un amplísimo programa de investigaciónen el que han participado investigadores de todos los países en que setoma en serio la argumentación. El líder indiscutido del programapragma-dialéctico de investigación es el profesor Dr. Frans H. vanEemeren, quien es reconocido como la figura señera de los estudiossobre argumentación en el mundo. Dado que algunos de sus discípulosprovienen de países de habla hispana, se han traducido ya cuatro de suslibros más importantes, pero no existía hasta ahora una colección deartículos suyos que dieran una idea más cabal de la extraordinariaamplitud y profundidad de todo el programa de investigación. Es tracta d'un mètode no paradigmàtic que intenta arribar al coneixement de la llengua a través de la pràctica constant de la mateixa, i no a partir d'unes teoritzacions gramaticals prèvies. c) És un mètode inductiu i actiu: el/l'estudiant, sota la direcció|adreça del professorat, analitzarà i estudiarà sobre el text les diversos fets lingüístics, que posteriorment sistematitzarà. Anaphores pronominales et nominales

This volume presents a series of studies which analyze the anaphoric relationship in French from a non-traditional angle. Concentrating on indirect anaphora and bridging phenomena rather than on "classical" anaphoric expressions whose referent does not change, they analyze the anaphoric use of expressions such as I'un / l'autre, le premier / le second and le même rather than the well-known pronouns and noun phrases. Furthermore, they look at the anaphorical functioning of expressions such as en or ça in order to get a better grasp of their nature and use rather than having it the other way around. In doing so, these studies exemplify some of the new approaches which are adopted in current research on anaphora and .for this reason they will appeal to all those who are interested in the semantic structure of the anaphoric and referential expressions and in the different ways in which these expressions are used to construct coherent texts and discourses, in combination with pragmatic and cognitive mechanisms and strategies. Les études réunies dans ce volume présentent des approches de la relation anaphorique en français qui s'écartent toutes dans une certaine mesure des recherches traditionnelles". Elles s'intéressent ainsi aux anaphores indirectes ou non fidèles, plutôt qu'aux anaphores fidèles, analysent le fonctionnement anaphorique d'expressions comme l'un / l'autre, le premier / le second et le même, plutôt que des pronoms et syntagmes nominaux, ou exploitent le comportement anaphorique d'expressions comme en et ça pour mieux comprendre leur nature et leur emploi, plutôt que l'inverse. STUDI MAKNA KONOTATIVE DARI LIRIK LAGU-LAGU ROCK MICHAEL LEARNS TO LYRICS

This writing is entitled A Study on Connotative Meaning of Selected Michael Learns To Rock’s Songs Lyrics. The aims of this writing areto identify the connotative meaning and to know and understand the message that existing in selected Michael Learns To Rock’s Songs Lyrics.In this research, the writer used descriptive qualitative method. It was used to describe the connotative meaning of selected Michael Learns To Rock’s Songs Lyrics and to describe the message that existing in selected Michael Learns To Rock’s Songs Lyrics.There were some procedures used by the writer in order to carry out this research, namely: The writer chose the selected Michael Learns To Rock’s Songs Lyric; the writer collected the data by downloading the songs and the lyrics; the writer listenned to the song to find the connotative meaning of the song lyrics; the writer read carefully the selected lyrics in order to understand its whole meaning; the writer found out any supporting books or some literature from library and internet to obtain important information, the theories, concepts, ideas or opinion which is relevant with the purpose of this writing; the writer retyped the data got from the lyric; after transcribing the data, the writeridentified and classified the forms of connotation; finally, the writer described the data in order to answer the problem of the research. Then, the data will be analyzed in descriptive based on the connotation theory. So, the writer used non-statistical analysis to analyze the data. The rearch shows that (1) denotative meaning lies on almost every song lyrics of Michael Learns To Rock, but the connotative meaning only lies fiveteen words in the three song lyrics, which it is the main data of this study and (2) the writer found connotative meaning occurs in partial of the lyric, and the denotative meaning occurs in majority of the lyric. The message of the lyric is delivered by MLTR in a good structure by using positive connotative meaning.
